Sponsor a Child in Need: NHS and the PTO are looking for volunteers to help buy a Christmas present for children living in orphanages. Please visit the “Giving Tree” at the main gate before or after school on December 1 and 2 to pick up a heart. The hearts contain the name, age, clothing sizes, and gender of the child who will be receiving the present. Gifts should be wrapped and sent to school with the heart attached no later than Wednesday, December 9. The gifts will be distributed to over 100 children at the Orphanage Christmas Party on December 11.
Food Drive: National Honor Society is organizing IA’s Annual Christmas Food Drive. We would like the IA community to have an opportunity to show our great appreciation for everything that the IA janitorial staff does to keep our campus beautiful, safe, and well maintained. NHS is asking for your help in collecting non-perishable food to present to the janitors before our Christmas holidays. Please encourage your child to bring any donations to their classroom before December 16th. We appreciate your support and help as we try to make this year’s food drive a great success!

Monday Update
Sight Words:
Enclosed is the list of sight words that the kindergarten class will learn this year. We will start with the Preprimer list and if time allows we will move on to the Primer list. Every Monday, the students will take home a bag with three sight words. They have to study them at home and bring the bag with the words back to school every day. They will have a Spelling Test every Friday. For the tests, the students should be able to recognize the sight words that they learn each week. (The words will always be on the board for them to see at all times.) I do not expect them to spell the words, only to copy them from the board.
Everyday Math:
Last week we began a new math curriculum called Everyday Math. The Everyday Math program introduces children to six major mathematical content areas: number sense, algebra, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and probability. The program helps children build and maintain basic skills through using everyday real-world problems and situations to develop critical thinking skills. Keep an eye on your child’s folder for special handouts with fun math activities to do at home. I will occasionally send these sheets home and they relate to the math lesson that your child learned that day. Please take the opportunity to read it and try the activities at home.
Early Release:
On Tuesday, November 10 children will be released from class at 11:00 am

November Newsletter
Dear Kindergarten Parents,
Thanks to all of you for making parent-teacher conferences so successful. Please don’t hesitate to call me (098723850) or e-mail me ( mgranados@interamerican.edu.ec ) if you have any questions or concerns.
Language Arts:
We have learned the names of the letters of the alphabet. We have learned to identify upper case letters and lower case letters. We are ready to learn the sounds the consonant letters stand for as well as the short vowel sounds.
Here are some sound-and-letter activities you and your child can do together.
• Help your child identify the letters that begin the names of familiar things around the house—toothbrush, bed, refrigerator, sink.
• At mealtimes, write on a card the beginning letter of each food you are serving. Have your child match the letters and the foods.
• Create a short vowel dictionary by labeling five sheets of paper with the letters Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, and Uu. Your child can draw or paste pictures of things that begin with those letters on each page.
Math:
- We will continue to learn numbers 0-10.
- We will be learning how to estimate and measure how long things are, how much they weigh, and how much they can hold. You can help your child practice by taking him/her to the grocery store with you. Here is what your child needs to do:
• Hold a different fruit in each hand. Tell which is lighter and which is heavier.
• Place two vegetables side-by-side. Tell which is shorter and which is longer.
Social Studies:
We will learn the following concepts:
• Learn about the families around South America. Compare them to our own families.
• Learn about Ecuador and its regions.
Science:
1. We will continue to learn about insects.
2. We will take care of our tomato garden.
3. Living and non living things
4. Food: making healthy choices
Thanks for all your help and support,
Ms. Monica
IMPORTANT DATES:

November 20th: Elementary Assembly
November 24th: Thanksgiving Dinner
