February Newsletter

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Today it is our 100th Day of School…hooray!!!

On Friday, February 5th I will be absent.. Ms. Erika Rivadeneira will be covering for me on that day.

Due to the carnival vacation, we will only have two weeks of school this month. I hope you enjoy a restful time at the beach, on the mountains, or wherever it may be!

Language Arts:
During these two weeks, we will continue to practice the short vowel sounds. We will also learn the sound the following letters make together: “th”, “sh”, “ph”and “ch”.

You could create a short vowel dictionary by labeling five sheets of paper with the letters Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, and Uu. Your child can draw or paste pictures of things that begin with those letters on each page. You could do the same with the diagraphs we are learning: th, sh, ph, and ch.

Continue reading to your child at home every night as well as writing down the name of the book you are reading to him/her. It is also very important that you supervise your child when he/she is reading his/her little reading book/booklet every night. This way, you make sure he/she is sounding the letters correctly and understanding what is being read.

High Frequency Words:

The high frequency word for the week of February 1, 2010 is here. Don’t forget to review all the High Frequency Words that we have learned: I, see, my, like, to, and, go, is.

Math:
• We will finish our unit on how to make numbers to 10 and how to use numbers to 20.
• We will be learning about time and money. You could practice counting with your child and using pennies, nickels, and dimes by playing a game of “Fruit Stand”. Here is what you can do:
1. Put a price tag next to each fruit.
2. First, you could be the buyer. You will take some pennies, nickels and dimes.
3. You will count your money to buy fruit.
4. Then, you let your child be the buyer.
• On a shopping trip, play a “clock watch” game with your child. Discuss the different kinds of clocks you see and why they are where you see them.

Social Studies:
We will learn to care for Earth. We will also learn about Chile, Brazil and Bolivia.

Science:

We will continue to study the food pyramid and to take care of our tomato garden.

Thanks for all your help and support and have a great carnival vacation!

Ms. Monica
